NEW DELHI: From the past several years Yahoo’s services have been witnessing a continuous decline and as a result the company has now decided to shut down

Yahoo Groups

from December 15.

Verizon

, the company which bought

Yahoo

in 2017, made this announcement marking an end for one of the largest message board systems of its time.
In an official statement posted by the company on its website it mentioned that the decline in user base is the main reason behind this decision. The company said, "Yahoo Groups has seen a steady decline in usage over the last several years. Over that same period, we've witnessed unprecedented levels of engagement across our properties as customers seek out premium, trustworthy content. While these decisions are never easy, we must sometimes make difficult decisions regarding products that no longer fit our long-term strategy as we hone our focus on other areas of the business."
Yahoo introduced the Yahoo Groups service in 2001 in order to compete against Reddit, Google Groups and Facebook Groups. The company has also mentioned that creation of new groups will be disabled from October 15 and from December 15 people will no longer be able to send and receive emails on Yahoo Groups. Along with this, users will also not be able to access the website. On the other hand, Yahoo Mail will continue to function as it is.
The company also added, "The emails you have sent and received will remain in your email, though beginning December 15 messages will not be sent or received from your group members. If you try to email your group after December 15, your message will not be delivered and you will receive a failure notification."
