NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Wednesday sought response of the Centre on a plea seeking

contempt

for not extending free education under the Right To Education (RTE) Act to children above 14 years from the underprivileged category.
Justice

Najmi Waziri

questioned the central government as to why a decision has not been taken to extend the RTE Act beyond Class VIII and up to Class XII despite the court’s directions passed more than a year ago.
The HC issued notice to the secretary of the

ministry of education

, seeking reply on the contempt petition filed by an NGO and listed the matter for further hearing on March 17.
Representing the NGO, advocate

Ashok Agarwal

submitted that due to inaction on the part of the central government, private schools across the country are throwing thousands of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students out of school every year after they pass Class VIII.
