After months of living in Tyler Perry’s mansion in Beverly Hills, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have officially relocated to Santa Barbara. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved into their family home in July of this year. They have settled into the quiet privacy of their community since their arrival and hope that this will be respected for their neighbours, as well as them for a family,” a spokesperson tells Vogue.
It’s the first permanent North American base for the couple, who, since stepping down from royal life in January, have rented homes in Canada and California.
Santa Barbara’s “quiet privacy” was no doubt a driving feature for the couple—earlier this month, the Sussexes announced they were suing a paparazzo for taking drone pictures in Los Angeles. (They are also involved in multiple lawsuits against the British tabloid media.) Santa Barbara, however, is an hour and a half outside of LA, and far less of a paparazzi magnet.
They’ll also have some buzzy celebrity neighbours: Oprah and Ellen Degeneres are just some of the other celebrities with nearby residences.
It’s also a personal milestone for the couple: Whereas Frogmore Cottage belonged to Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, this is the first home the couple own as private citizens. Slowly but surely, they’re carving out a post-royal life for themselves and their son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor. One, it seems, that will involve a lot of scenic drives up the 101.
