For fans of SZA, it’s been a long wait since she released her critically-acclaimed debut album, CTRL, in the summer of 2017. But despite recent rumblings of label delays, the moment finally arrived last night with the surprise release of her new song and video “Hit Different,” seeing the singer return to the spotlight in style.
Produced by The Neptunes and featuring Ty Dolla $ign, the song is a classic SZA sultry jam, perfectly timed to soundtrack the last days of summer—and with the array of kaleidoscopic looks on offer, the self-directed visuals only take the track’s laid-back groove to the next level. Opening with SZA and her backup dancers in the classic Aaliyah-inspired silhouette of crop-tops and baggy trousers, here in a deliciously warm shade of dusky orange, the singer then dances on top of a stack of hay bales wearing this summer’s ultimate throwback trend: an oversized tie-dye tee.
Other highlights include an Ottolinger bra and shirt set printed with a Renaissance-inspired painting, and a striking shot of the singer dancing in a field, naked but for the red paint that covers her body. (Her Cleopatra-inspired beaded braids in the final sequence make for a standout beauty moment, too.) With her promise on Twitter that more music is “on the way,” we can rest assured that the wait for SZA’s return is now over. The fact she’s delivering on the fashion front too is just the cherry on the cake.
