The Supreme Court on Monday said an invitation to

successful lawyers

to become

judges

of the SC or HCs should be accepted and disapproved of refusal of such offers by some “fine advocates”.
This remark came from a bench of CJI SA

Bobde

and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian on a

PIL

filed by advocate

Ashwini Upadhyay

, who was seeking a direction to the government to amend the

Constitution

to increase the retirement age of HC judges from 62 years to 65 years. SC judges retire at 65.
“I know of many finest advocates who have refused the offer of judgeship in HCs only because of early retirement age for HC judges,” he said. “If successful and ‘finest’ advocates don’t want to become judges of constitutional courts, then there is something wrong with their mindset. And you call them ‘finest’ advocates,” Bobde said.
