NEW DELHI: Former
deputy chief minister
has called a truce with the Congress high command. The dissident leader gave the credit to party general secretary
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra
instead of her brother
Before Pilot’s rebellion last month, another Congress young turk Jyotiraditya Scindia had revolted against the party in March. His rebellion proved costly as he walked away with 22 MLAs, leading to the downfall of the Congress government led by Kamal Nath in Madhya Pradesh.
Before staging a coup, Scindia says he sought a hearing with Rahul Gandhi for several months. but failed to get an appointment. A peeved Scindia was left with no choice but to bid adieu to the Congress.
However, the scenario changed when Pilot attempted a similar revolt.
Sources said Pilot also wanted Rahul Gandhi to hear him out, but his efforts proved futile.
The sources said Congress interim president
a nod to hold negotiations with Pilot.
Subsequently, a channel of negotiations was opened between Pilot and Priyanka. The two even met about a fortnight ago, the sources said.
Finally on August 10, Pilot drove to Rahul’s official residence where Priyanka was already present. The three had a detailed discussion.
According to sources, Pilot was adamant on his demand of a leadership change in Rajasthan. But Priyanka told Pilot in clear terms that Gehlot would not be removed as Rajasthan CM. However, she is believed to have also said that “we all are family and we want you to stay”.
Later in the evening, the party put out a statement, stating that Pilot, Priyanka and Rahul had a "frank, open and conclusive discussion".
It also stated that the Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi had decided that a three-member committee would be formed "to address the issues raised by Sachin Pilot and the aggrieved MLAs and arrive at an appropriate resolution".
The committee comprises Priyanka, Congress treasurer Ahmed Patel and general secretary in charge of organisation KC Venugopal. The committee would go into the grievances of Pilot and the 18 rebel MLAs owing allegiance to Pilot and work in a time-bound manner.
The committee members met the dissidents later in the day in a bid to to hear their grievances and redress them.
While talking to the media, Pilot hinted at Priyanka's role in his homecoming. But he did not mention Rahul.
He thanked her for "taking the time to hear us out".
