KOLKATA/AIZAWL: The

Bengal government

on Monday extended a whittled-down lockdown till June 30 even as Kolkata continued unlocking and returning to a life of work and commerce while struggling to conform to stay-safe norms. The lockdowntill June 30 will involve a shutdown in containment zones, zero offline activity in the education sector and public places like multiplexes with restrictions in use of public transport.
Meanwhile,

Mizoram

, breaking ranks with other northeastern states which began reopening malls, restaurants, temples and places of worship on Monday, decided to place cities and towns in the state under a complete lockdown for two weeks starting Monday midnight because of a spike in cases. A health official, however, said there could be “area-wise moderation”, particularly in rural areas. The state reported eight cases on Monday, taking the tally from 1 to 42 in a week.
Bengal CM

Mamata Banerjee

announced the new lockdown plans with an eye on the state’s rising Covid graph. “There has been a spike because of increased mobility,” she said, making an appeal for safe practices.
