Megan Thee Stallion has been having her very own Hot Girl Summer yet again. First, she released the breakout song of the season with Cardi B. Their viral rap track, “WAP,” still has everyone talking—and it’s racked up over 90 million streams since its release. This past weekend, she also nabbed the Best Hip-Hop Award for her hit song “Savage” at the 2020 VMAs.
To keep that exciting career momentum going, the Houston rapper returned to the stage this week for Red Rocks Unpaused, a three-day, live-streamed virtual music festival. She performed some of her biggest hits for the event, wearing an attention-grabbing look that took cues from Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft, consisting of a crop top and hotpants with studded garter belts and thigh-high boots.
Below, the rapper talks about performing again, the wild success of “WAP,” and what she thinks about her music taking over TikTok. Plus, see exclusive behind-the-scenes photos from her Red Rocks Unpaused performance.

Honestly, I just love performing, I love the energy of bringing my music to a stage. Performing and sharing energy with my hotties is one of the things I’ve missed the most during this period of time. But that’s why I’m so excited for Red Rocks Unpaused. Even if there’s not a live crowd, knowing that my fans are turning up at home with me gives me so much energy and fuels me to go even harder.2. Tell us about the look you wore for the Red Rocks Unpaused performance. What was the inspiration?
I had an idea for a look that would pay tribute to Lara Croft, but in my own Stalli style. The two piece look is a combination of a sexy slick silhouette, paired with velvet harnessing and jeweled details by Carmelita Cimone Cameron. It looks so bomb on stage under the lights! It’s a custom look designed by Brookelyn Styles, she really killed it, and it was constructed by Iggy Soliven.

I love to serve looks whenever I’m doing a show, and there’s two things that go into every outfit: it’s gotta be sexy and it’s gotta be able to handle Thee Stallion’s moves. I dance a lot when I perform, so whatever I’m wearing has to accommodate that. A staple for me is a pair of booty shorts and a top, but I love to go extra with it, whether it’s leather, lace-up, or leopard print. I like to take something simple and really transform it into a standout look—that’s signature Megan Thee Stallion.4. How have you been staying creative and sane during the pandemic?
I’ve been writing a lot and really just staying focused on my music. I feel like there’s so few times in life that you’ll be forced to be at home and so, for me, I really looked at it as an opportunity to keep pushing myself in my craft. Making music, and knowing that in the future I’ll be back out there, touring, doing shows, meeting hotties, is really what inspires me. This time has really shown how people can come together and be united, and that makes me hopeful. And my lil babies 4oe and Dos [her dogs] always make me happy, so I love just playing with them outside when I need a break.

The way “WAP” has taken off has just been crazy y’all. Cardi and I knew it was a hit and we were so happy with the video and the track itself, but I don’t think we could’ve ever predicted that it’d be breaking records and provoking so many different reactions. It’s such an upbeat and sexy track and I love that with so many things going on right now, we could bring something positive and fun into the mix that makes people just wanna dance, let loose, and enjoy themselves for a moment. 2020 has been a wild year for my career, and collaborating with Cardi was something I've always wanted to do. So to have come together on “WAP” and for it to have been this successful, I just couldn't’ be more grateful for where I’m at right now.6. You also can’t go on TikTok without hearing a Megan Thee Stallion song. Have you been surprised at how viral your songs go?
I can’t even lie, TikTok is so much fun and I’m always looking forward to seeing how the hotties take my tracks and get so creative with the dances and challenges. I think what’s so cool about it is that on TikTok, fans take their favorite bars and use those snippets for their videos, so it’s like, the bars that I’ve written and refined over and over again, really resonate and become these big, exciting moments. It always surprises me because the trends on TikTok move so fast, and sometimes older tracks of mine pop up and get this second life out of nowhere. The new generation are super, super creative, and I’m honestly happy that my music can be a part of that.

In a year with hardly any live music, it felt surreal to perform a show at a venue as iconic as Red Rocks.Photo: Emilio Coochie 7. What are you up to for the rest of the summer?
It’s a crazy time for everybody right now. If we’ve learnt anything, it’s that nobody knows what’s around the corner. No matter what, it’s always a Hot Girl Summer for me, so I’m gonna continue working hard, doing whatever I can to stay connected with the hotties, and continue to stay positive and enjoy living in the present. I promise I’m always working on something for y’all so just be patient with me!
