Dev, a 13-year-old boy of Indian origin from Australia has made the news by whipping up an Indian favourite on the first episode of the current season of MasterChef Australia. The task for the contestants was to cook their signature dish, and Dev served up a rich lamb Mughlai curry with a side of saffron rice, raita, chutney and smoked chicken kebab. The budding chef deeply impressed the show's three judges, Melissa Leong, Andy Allen and Jock Zonfrillo. Giving them an authentic North Indian experience, he presented the food in copper servewear, as is the tradition in the country.

Being among the top 14 of the 2,000 applicants selected to participate in the show is no easy feat, and Dev revealed that seeing his preparation would make his mother, who taught him how to cook, very proud.

Captioned ‘Dev’s Indian Feast,’ a post on the official Instagram account of MasterChef Australia gives the world a glimpse at the teen's scrumptious dish, and the big moment when he got the chance to present his creation to the judges. “I know that's a lot of elements, so it was a bit of a risk,” he says in the clip, “But I think this dish represents my heritage, different Indian flavours and techniques, for example the smoking of the chicken.” The video has been re-shared several times already, with hundreds around the world appreciating Dev's culinary talent.

The Indian culture of having meals as a family is well known across the world as a symbol of togetherness. After having a taste of the dish, Zonfrillo responded with, “I’m on the verge of being emotional. I feel as if I’m eating at your table at home with your parents and your brothers. I can't begin to explain to you how thankful I am that you cooked this, but I'm so appreciative to have the opportunity to stand here and try your food.” He ended his feedback with something anyone with a passion for cooking would love to hear: “My mouth is still watering. I'm having difficulty speaking, it's watering that much!”

If Dev's Masterchef Australia moment has inspired you to try your own hand at the kitchen, there' no time like the present to put on your apron and get to to work. Find some must-try curry recipes here.
