district on Saturday morning.
One of the two slain terrorists, Umer Ahmad Bhat, had joined Hizb barely three days ago, while his accomplice,
Nadeem Ahmad Bhat
, had been active since May 31, sources said. An official statement about the identity and affiliation of the two was awaited till the filing of this report.
Based on a tip-off received by Kulgam police about the presence of terrorists in Zadoora Nipora area, a joint team of Army’s 19 RR, CRPF’s 18 Bn and J&K police launched a cordon-and-search operation on Saturday morning. “The terrorists were given the opportunity to surrender, but they opened fire and lobbed grenades at the security forces, triggering the encounter,” the spokesperson said, adding that it was a “clean operation without any collateral damage”.
Soon after the encounter, internet services were temporarily suspended in the area as a precautionary measure, and restored by late evening. The forces also recovered arms and ammunition besides other incriminating material from the site of the firefight. The items seized have been taken into case records for further investigation, the spokesperson said.
