When it comes to her press tours, actor Elle Fanning always delivers a fashion fantasy. She favors dreamy, ethereal gowns from the likes of Rodarte or Miu Miu that make her look the part of a true Hollywood princess. This is true for her latest press tour for her new TV series, The Great, in which she plays Catherine the Great (the empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796). In looks styled by Samantha McMillen, Fanning has been choosing striking ensembles all month long that feel like they’re from another era, including this elegant white lace Chanel dress with a sweetheart neckline. Her latest look, however, is one of her best ones from the press run yet—and it even nods to an iconic Disney princess.
For a virtual press appearance this week, Fanning slipped into an intricate yellow gown by Turkish designer Bora Aksu. With floral embellishments, a shredded hemline, and two large, pink bows at the shoulders, the opulent design channels the iconic yellow gown worn by Belle in Beauty and the Beast. If Belle were a real-life Hollywood star, this is what she would wear—though Fanning’s dress feels decidedly less cartoony, thanks to the puffed sleeves and white lace underlay. It’s extreme maximalism at its finest, yet Fanning skillfully managed to wear the dress, not have the dress wear her. (It helped that she has her regal posing down, too, as evidenced in her ballerina-style, pointed-toe stature.) It almost makes you want to never want to see a little black dress again.
