A day in the life of Destiny Nicole Frasqueri, aka Princess Nokia, is guaranteed to be eventful, even under lockdown. The New York-based rapper and actor has spent her summer self-isolating, but that doesn’t mean she’s succumbed to boredom. “I’ve been staying up with my best friend till four in the morning because we have so much fun watching Degrassi reruns and laughing our butts off,” she shared with Vogue. Fresh from a weekend spent with her House of Mofongo crew, she kickstarted her week in high spirits. “I just celebrated my 20th birthday this weekend, and I had so much fun, everybody was in a great vibration,” she explained. “When I get together with my friends, we exude this really special New York energy that comes from our culture, our heritage, and our background with dance and queerness.”

Always eager to express herself, Nokia has found ways to push forward artistically while at home. “Even through the pandemic and quarantine, I’ve been very blessed to have a lot of creative abundance and continue working throughout this,” she says. Giving back, especially during Pride month, was another priority. “I’ve been doing a lot of donating and advocating for Black Lives Matter,” she says. “Specifically for the trans community and Black trans women who I believe are the most beautiful in the world. I always like to use my platform to advocate for my sisters.”

After a quick getting ready session sharing her vintage John Galliano for Dior goodies, Nokia was ready to take on the ultimate New York pastime: a hike through Central Park. A place that holds special meaning for her—her parents met on its green fields, and it served as the backdrop for her video for “Young Girls”—it was the perfect location for an afternoon of bird-watching and impromptu photoshoots. “It’s where I come to just enjoy nature and time away from work,” she says. “I just have so many wonderful memories here.”
