NEW DELHI: Dexamethasone, an inexpensive and widely used steroid, was included in the treatment protocol for Covid-19 patients in moderate to severe stages of illness by the Union health ministry on Saturday.
The updated 'Clinical Management Protocols for Covid-19' advises the use of dexamethasone, which is already used in a wide range of conditions for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant effects, as an alternative choice to methylprednisolone for managing moderate to severe cases of Covid-19.

India It took 110 days for coronavirus infections in the country to reach one lakh, while just 39 days more to go past the five lakh-mark. Medical experts have pointed to the ramped up Covid-19 testing, now available more extensively and at a reasonable price, as a big reason for the spike in cases recently. Six days after recording four lakh infections, India's Covid-19 tally went past the five lakh-mark on Saturday with the highest single-day surge of 18,552 cases, while the death toll climbed to 15,685, according to Union health ministry data. The Covid-19 caseload increased to 5,08,953, while 384 fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours. States Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu continued to witness a spike in coronavirus cases with the state reporting 3,713 cases and 68 fatalities, pushing the infection count to 78,335 and death toll to 1,025. Uttarakhand: The cost of testing for Covid-19 in private labs has been fixed between Rs 2000 to Rs 2200 in the state, said Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat. West Bengal: Thirteen more people died due to Covid-19 in West Bengal, taking the state's toll to 629, while 521 fresh cases pushed the tally to 16,711. Delhi: The national capital recorded 2,948 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total case count across the 80,000-mark, and 66 more deaths due to the disease. Maharashtra: A BJP legislator from Thane district of Maharashtra has tested positive for coronavirus infection. The 40-year-old legislator is presently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai. UP: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed satisfaction over the daily Covid-19 testing capacity in the state reaching the 20,000 mark, and said the target should now be to increase it to 25,000 each day, an official said. Karnataka: Offering a ray of hope to all those battling the deadly coronavirus, a woman has successfully recovered from the disease at the ripe old age of 99, leaving the medical fraternity and her family elated. Marceline Saldanha had contracted the pathogen after coming in contact with her grandson and was hospitalised on her 99th birthday on June 18. J&K: Two coronavirus-related fatalities were reported from Jammu and Kashmir, pushing the death toll to 93 in the Union territory. Andhra: An IAS officer in the Andhra Pradesh chief minister's office has tested positive for coronavirus. The bureacrat is asymptomatic. Kerala: In the highest single day spike of Covid-19 cases so far, Kerala reported 195 positive cases, taking the total number of infections in the state to 4,071. Mizoram: A 32-year-old man has tested positive for Covid-19 in Mizoram, taking the northeastern state's tally to 148. Puducherry: An 82-year-old woman succumbed to Covid-19 at a government hospital while 87 fresh cases were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the tally in the Union territory to 619. Rajasthan: Nine deaths due to coronavirus and 127 fresh cases of the disease were reported in Rajasthan, taking the total number of positive cases to 16,787 and the death toll to 389 in the state. Tripura: Thirty-six more people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Tripura, taking the northeastern state's tally to 1,331. HP: A police station in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district has been sealed after three policemen posted there tested positive for novel coronavirus, a district official said. The number of positive cases in Himachal Pradesh now stands at 873. Odisha: Odisha reported one more Covid-19 fatality, taking the death toll to 18 as 170 more people, including an NDRF jawan, tested positive for the virus, pushing the tally to 6,350. Sikkim: Two more Covid-19 cases have been reported in Sikkim, taking the total number of infections in the Himalayan state to 87. Chandigarh: A total of three cases of Covid-19 were reported from Chandigarh, taking the total number of Covid-19 cases to 427. Bihar: As many as 180 more cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Bihar, taking the total number of cases in the state to 8,858. Haryana: Haryana reported seven more deaths due to coronavirus, while 543 fresh cases pushed the tally in the state to 13,427.

At least 9,823,840 cases of coronavirus have been registered in 196 countries and territories. The United States is the worst-hit country with 125,039 deaths from 2,467,837 cases. At least 670,809 people have been declared recovered. Italy registered 30 more deaths of people with coronavirus infections on Friday, with 16 of them in Lombardy, the northern region that continues to still have by far the highest daily tally of new confirmed cases.
