NEW DELHI: The Centre has told the Delhi high court it is aware of the dangers of fake news circulating on social media platforms and rules have been framed under the Intermediaries Guidelines - which regulate social media platforms - to deal with the issue.

The submissions by the government came in reply to a PIL by former RSS idealogue K N Govindacharya seeking directions to Google, Facebook and Twitter to ensure removal of fake news and hate speech as well as public disclosure of their designated officers in India.
Govindacharya has also moved an application through advocate Virag Gupta, seeking removal of illegal groups, including 'bois locker room' from social media platforms.
In response, the government said according to the Intermediary Guidelines, grievance officers of the websites are bound to redress complaints within one month of receiving them.
