Pune police crime branch officials have arrested six persons including an Indian Army personnel during an operation that led to the seizure of fake currency notes with a face value of at least Rs 10 crores, said a senior official on Wednesday evening.
The joint operation carried out by the Pune police and Military Intelligence (MI), was conducted at Sanjay Park in Viman Nagar area of Pune. The officials said that the fake notes are being counted and that it will take some time to calculate the exact value of the stash.
A statement from the defence officials is sought and awaited.
“After detailed planning with the MI team, a joint operation was carried out today (Wednesday) in which 6 persons - including one serving military person - have been detained with multiple denominations of fake Indian and foreign currency. Counting of currency is going on as per the procedure,” read a statement by Bachchan Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Pune.
According to the police, the information about the fake currency operation was provided by the officials of military intelligence. Some of the fake currency notes were in the denominations of Rs 1,000
“There were two parties involved. One party was seeking American dollars while the other one had a supply of Indian (counterfeit) currency. They decided and met at a spot from where they were intercepted,” said Singh.
The source of the currency is part of the investigation. Officials of Unit-4 of Pune police crime branch, along with Anti Narcotic Cell West, worked with inputs provided by officials of military intelligence.
The raids were conducted at multiple locations in the city during which, counterfeit currency of demonetised denomination along with Indian as well as foreign currency was found.
