NEW DELHI: As widely speculated since months, Apple may finally announce shift to its own processors at the upcoming developers conference WWDC. According to a report in Bloomberg, "Apple is preparing to announce shift to its own main processors in Mac computers, replacing chips from

Corp, as early as this month at its annual developer conference...."
The company is said to be working on a version of MacOS that will run on ARM-based processors and as per the report the shift is imminent. The first machines running on Apple processors may launch as early as 2021. The company is said to have as many as three ARM-based Mac processors in development based on the next

’s A14 chip as part of its 'Kalamata' project. This means that MacBook or MacBook Pro running on ARM will use one of Apple's A series of processors.
As per the Bloomberg report, the shift has been prompted by Intel’s slowing performance gains. Apple’s internal tests of Macs with ARM-based chips are said to have shown performance increases over their Intel-powered alternatives. The increased power efficiency of ARM-based processors is expected to help MacBooks become thinner and lighter in the future. The shift to ARM will eventually include the entire Mac lineup, says Bloomberg report.
Incidentally, there have been rumours of Apple moving away from Intel since years. Analysts, however, still see this as a big move. As one, it means Apple will no longer have to wait for Intel to develop a new processor to launch its laptops. And like in case of iPhones, the move will also help Apple devices stand out from competition in the laptop market. As other PC makers such as

, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft and others use the same Intel chips.
The news also sent Apple's stock soaring high, touched all-time high of $343.99 at the end of trading. Post Bloomberg report, Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani wrote that

Apple Inc.

's ability to design processors in-house is an "underappreciated" element of its story.
