Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Amazon announced plans Tuesday to expand its hub in Boston and hire an additional 3,000 corporate and technology workers.

The company said its investment will add to support teams across the United States for various services, including Alexa, Amazon Web Services, Amazon Robotics and Amazon Pharmacy.

"We're proud to be creating more than 3,000 new jobs over the next several years at our Boston Tech Hub," Rohit Prasad, head scientist for Alexa, said in a statement. "Much of the technology that makes Alexa smarter every day is invented in Boston.

"Our teams here play a key role in driving Amazon's innovations -- from Alexa to AWS to Amazon Pharmacy -- and help us keep delighting customers around the world."

Amazon, which already employs 3,700 at the Boston hub, said the new jobs will include roles in software development, artificial intelligence and machine learning and non-tech corporate positions in product management, human resources and finance.

"Amazon is continuing to create new economic opportunities in our city," Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said.

"This expansion will grow our technology workforce and support a strong pipeline of diverse talent."

Amazon plans to build its expanded office, which will cover 630,000 square feet, in Boston's Seaport district.

Once the jobs are filled, Boston and Cambridge, Mass., will be home to about 7,000 Amazon employees.
