Tamil Nadu crossed the 10,000-mark in Covid-19 fatalities on Thursday, becoming the only state after Maharashtra to record more than 10,000 deaths from the virus even as total active cases in the country continued to fall for the seventh consecutive day.
Showing clear signs of the virus slowing down, fresh infections in the country dropped to 71,275, remaining below the 80,000-mark for the sixth consecutive day. Barring Mondays, when new cases have always shown a drop because of lower testing during the weekends, fresh infections recorded on Thursday were the lowest in the last 44 days. The lowest figure of infections before this (minus Mondays) was last recorded on August 25 at 66,860. Active cases continued to fall and stood at 9,01,816 against Wednesday’s figure of 9,10,851. With 68 fresh deaths, Tamil Nadu’s toll reached 10052, second highest after Maharashtra’s 39,430 casualties.
