NEW DELHI: Having dipped below 90,000-plus two weeks ago, daily Covid-19 cases in India continue to hold steady in the 80,000-89,000 range. The country reported over 84,000 fresh cases on Thursday while the daily death toll remained over 1,100 for the third day running.
With 84,176 fresh infections on Thursday, India’s coronavirus caseload climbed to 63,90,798, as per data collated by TOI from state governments. The country also recorded 1,102 fatalities from the virus, taking the total toll to less than 300 short of 1 lakh, at 99,730.
The last time India had recorded more than 90,000 infections in a day was on September 19, when 94,145 cases were logged. Since then, daily cases have been above 80,000 except on Mondays. Active cases rose marginally for the second consecutive day, crossing the 9.5 lakh mark again after several days. Recoveries have risen to over 53.3 lakh, accounting for more than 83% of all cases.
Andhra Pradesh became the second state after Maharashtra to record 7 lakh cases. Tamil Nadu went past the 6-lakh mark while UP crossed 4 lakh in total cases and Kerala topped 2 lakh. Kerala has jumped to the ninth position following a massive surge in infections after the Onam festival.
It reported over 8,000 new cases for the second day. The state has banned the gathering of over five people in public places. The curbs will come into force from October 3 and will continue till the month-end.
200 more spl trains to tackle festive rush
The Indian Railways is planning to introduce 200 more special trains between October 15 and November 30 to cater to the passengers travelling during the festive season. “We have directed all our general managers to talk to the state governments and local administration to assess the requirement. They will take into consideration the last year’s traffic and the prevailing Covid situation while sending proposals. We have estimated that we may need to run nearly 200 more trains,” Railway Board CEO and chairman V K Yadav said. He also said that the railways will start operation of a new Kisan Rail between Nagpur and Delhi soon. “As and when we get request to start kisan train, we take the decision within 2-3 days,” Yadav said.
