Just a few hours’ drive away from Mumbai, lies Pune—the cultural capital of the Marathas. The second-largest city of Maharashtra is also home to several educational institutions, earning it the ‘Oxford of the East’ moniker. Filmmakers have always been attracted to its historical monuments, the old residential buildings known as ‘wadas’, and the grand architecture of its campuses. In 2006, the cast and crew of the Hollywood film A Mighty Heart, starring Angelina Jolie, set base in Pune to shoot the majority of the film. The destination served as Karachi in the Michael Winterbottom-directorial, based on the search for kidnapped Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Bollywood, too, has sought out the city for many of its capers. For a virtual tour, get set to stream these Hindi movies.Aiyyaa (2012)
