The floating city of Venice is a picturesque postcard come to life. The crisscrossing canals, the ancient castles steeped in history, iconic museums, cathedrals and the bustling public squares make for a stunning backdrop, so it's no surprise that it's played host to many movie shoots—the famous Gondola ride on the Grand Canal that runs across the city has been immortalised in many scenes and songs. From high-paced action thrillers, to romantic declarations of love, here are the works you can watch online to transport yourself to the beautiful city of Venice while sitting at home.

The Tourist (2010)

American tourist Frank (Johnny Depp) and a mysterious British woman Elise's (Angelina Jolie) paths cross each other as they meet on a train heading to Venice. Elise is running away from the police, who are after her to find the whereabouts of her lover who stole millions from a gangster. Frank gets caught up in the adventure with Elise; and the rest you’ll have to find out when you watch the movie. A majority of the film is set in Venice, so you can spot some famous Venetian landmarks, like the Palazzo Pisani Moretta, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection Museum, the Rialto market, the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Scuola Grande Di Santa Maria Della Misericordia and the Arsenale Di Venezia.

Fakir of Venice (2019)

A Venetian artist contacts conman Adi Contractor (Farhan Akhtar) to find a fakir for his art installation. After searching everywhere for one who might interest the European crowd, he finds nothing—or at least until he meets Sattar Ali (Annu Kapoor), a construction worker, that Adi could pass off as a holy fakir in Venice. From there on begins a journey of self-discovery and deceit, set against the beautiful background of Venice’s waterways and public squares.

Inferno (2016)

The movie is based on Dan Brown’s book of the same name, which is the third installation of the Robert Langdon thriller series. It’s preceded by The Da Vinci Code (2006) and Angels and Demons (2009). In this adventure, Robert Langdon (Tom Cruise) finds himself in a hospital in Florence, Italy, with no memory of how he turned up there. After a botched assassination attempt, he discovers the items he had with him when he got shot. These are clues that lead him and Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones), on a journey to stop a terrorist attack that would be potentially disastrous for the human race. Their race against time takes them to many beautiful locations around Italy, including a pit stop at Venice’s Saint Mark Basilica and the Doge’s Palace.

The Great Gambler (1979)

This vintage Bollywood cult classic had every element of a potboiler: long-lost twin brothers, high-stake gambling, blackmail, terrorist attack plans, and a club dancer with a heart of gold. Amitabh Bachchan stars in a double role in this one, along with Zeenat Aman and Neetu Singh. The movie had been shot in many locations worldwide, including Cairo, Lisbon, Rome and Venice. The famous song ‘Do Lafzon Ki Hai’, featuring Bachchan and Aman, takes place on a Gondola ride through the Grand Canal in Venice, where a gondolier serenades them with an Italian ballad.

Kambakkht Ishq (2009)

You might know about this Akshay Kumar- and Kareena Kapoor-starrer mostly because of the high profile guest appearances by Hollywood celebrities like Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh. The romantic-comedy revolves around a Hollywood stuntman, Viraj (Kumar) and a medical student, Simrita (Kapoor). Both of them have a very low opinion of the other sex because of their past experiences, which leads to a series of misadventures involving their recently married best friends. The duo instantly take a dislike to each other, but the universe keeps bringing them together. For instance, on a fateful trip to Venice’s most famous landscapes.

Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008)

Fresh out of his debut, Ranbir Kapoor starred in this romantic comedy with Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba. The story revolves around Raj (Kapoor), a carefree playboy who leaves a trail of broken hearts behind him. He gets a taste of his own medicine when he is turned down by the love of his life, Gayatri (Padukone). This makes him realise the faults in his ways. One of the most famous songs from the movie is shot across beautiful locations in Italy, including a Gondola ride in the Venetian Grand Canal, and at one of Venice’s most popular tourist attractions, the Saint Mark’s Square.
