Actor Bipasha Basu considered herself likely to dress up as a bride onscreen rather than off-screen. “I believed in marriage, but I never thought I would get married,” the 41-year-old had once revealed in an interview. Fate had other plans and Basu wore a red lehenga on April 30, 2016 for her wedding ceremony seeped in Bengali traditions. Blame it on the groom, actor Karan Singh Grover. Ironically enough, this couple’s perfectly scripted romance began on the sets of a horror film.

Up ahead, we are reliving the couple’s relationship trajectory that’s studded with many a memorable moments, including a heartfelt proposal and glimpses from inside their nuptials.

Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover’s love story

Theirs was a classic meet-cute that several couples in the Bollywood film industry can resonate with. Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover met on the sets of the 2015 thriller Alone. The pair got close during its filming, and was spotted hanging out with each other on several occasions. They didn’t even shy away from some PDA on social media, and often shared pictures of themselves together. “I feel I am lucky, as I live only for love. And no man has given me more love and respect than Karan. I might not be looking for the same thing in marriage, like others do. I have my own checklist, and I have ticked my boxes accordingly,” Basu had said.

The proposal

“There is so much that happens in your life. You realise what you need to change and that comes when you truly realise what you want and what makes you happy. She made me realise that in many ways. And I kept on falling in love with her over and over again," Karan Singh Grover revealed about his feelings. It stands to reason then that just after a few months into the relationship, he decided to pop the question to Basu. In December 2015, the 38-year-old proposed to Basu during a trip to Thailand for New Year's. “We were in Koh Samui, it was December 31 and the sky was lit with fireworks. I was carrying the ring with me and something told me that this is the right time. So, while she was capturing the fireworks on video, I took the opportunity and gave her the ring,” he disclosed.

The wedding planning

The couple zeroed down on April 2016 to be officially married, and St Regis Mumbai was finalised as the wedding venue. The bride planned the three-day celebration end-to-end. “Honestly, the two months before the wedding was strenuous for me, as I was the event manager for my own wedding. I was particular about every minute detail,” Basu said. “Being particular is an understatement, she was anal about everything, and she just wouldn't rest. Few days after the wedding, she woke up in the middle of the night and asked me about which security is handling which door and where are the guests entering from,” Grover added.

The court marriage

On April 28, 2016, Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover officially wed in a court marriage that saw immediate friends and family in attendance. The intimate signing was preceded by a small puja. The bride chose a pastel pink sari for the special day with a layered necklace, while the groom dressed in a white bandhgala.

The mehandi

With a Parisian-meets-Indian theme, Mumbai’s Villa 69 played host to the first leg of the wedding festivities. Apart from family members, the intimate mehandi saw Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover’s close friends, including Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Raj Kundra, Sophie Choudry, and Candice Pinto among others, in attendance. A number of dance performances on song from Basu’s films including ‘Beeedi Jaliyele’, ‘Touch My Body’ and more were lined-up in honour of the couple on the fun-filled event. Embracing the vibrancy of the ceremony, the bride chose a pastel pink lehenga designed by Anushree Reddy that comprised an anarkali-style blouse and a billowing pink skirt printed with large blooms. She topped it off with floral jewellery, and a satlada necklace.

The wedding

April 30 set the stage for the big day. As an ode to Bipasha Basu’s background, the couple's wedding rituals were done in the Bengali tradition. The ceremony saw ceremonies like saat paak, where the bride’s brothers carried her on a wooden seat with her face covered with betel leaves. After completing seven circles, they placed her next to the groom for the pheras. The groom made a grand entry riding a Segway, surrounded by friends and family and a dhol. “I felt no jitters absolutely; in fact, I had the best time of my life during those two days of the wedding. My mom said that I was like a hooligan of a bride,” Basu had said.

The Sabyasachi bride

Bipasha Basu turned to friend and fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee for the important outfit. The bride wore a generously embellished red lehenga by him that comprised the couturier’s signature blouse, called Bipasha. His all-time bestseller design is inspired by—quite obviously—the actor, during a proposed dance sequence for Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. Recalling the curation, Mukherjee says, “When Bipasha was getting married, she came to the store, looked at the blouse and gushed: ‘This blouse has my name written all over it.’ I smiled and said: ‘Quite literally’.” He went on to add that dressing Basu on her wedding day was a “sentimental” occasion. "To add to that, we are both Bengalis. And she was very sure she wanted to be a Bengali bride in 'Sabyasachi Red.' (Bipasha) did all us Bengalis proud. She wore Chandan and a shola mukut, she covered her face with betel leaf. This is what I love about Indian weddings. As a bride, on the day of your wedding you always come home." The groom opted for a white bandhgala with dhoti pants.
