What does 24 hours look like with rising star Madelyn Cline? Turns out, it includes lots of coffee, horseback riding, and a casual hike to the Hollywood sign. Vogue recently caught up with the actor in L.A. a few days before she heads to Greece to film Knives Out 2—and together, we squeezed in as much fun as we could before her work life picks up again. “I’m terrified,” she laughs of her grueling schedule ahead. “I’ve never had a schedule like this. But it’s very exciting. It feels like it’s all happening at once.”
Cline’s busy day began by making iced coffee at home and chilling with her boyfriend, Chase Stokes, who co-stars with her on Outer Banks. The duo talked about how they kept their relationship a secret before announcing it to the world in June last year. “We wanted to enjoy it first,” says Cline. The couple also reminisced on when they watched the very first episode of Outer Banks together in 2020 (the series now has a cult following). “[The cast] was all quarantined in my apartment,” Cline says. “I Postmated tequila, and we made a big pillow fort.”
After some caffeine, Cline headed to Beachwood café for even more, where she picked up a drip coffee. “[Before Outer Banks], I’d read books here and I’d be submitting for auditions,” she says. She still often can’t believe that she’s made it as an actor—and that moving to L.A. really forced her to hone her craft. “I realized, holy shit, there’s a thousand of me here,” she says. “I had to get to know myself really quickly. Believing in myself wasn’t something that came easy.”
To end her day, Cline then took Vogue to a horse farm, where she used to work in the stables, for a quick ride. “When I’m riding, I feel very centered—but also very alert, because I’m trying to figure out what the horse is telling me and what’s around us,” she says. “If you stay calm, they’ll stay calm.” For a postcard-worthy ending, Cline took us for a hike up to the Hollywood sign, where she looked back on all of her success thus far. “This is one of the first places I came when I moved here, and now it feels like this crazy full-circle moment,” she says.
