NEW DELHI: At least 22,000 houses built in urban areas under PM Awas Yojna (PMAY) and earlier schemes are being used as Covid-19 facility units, housing ministry sources said. The ministry on Thursday celebrated the fifth anniversary of major urban rejuvenation missions including the PMAY and Smart Cities programme.
Speaking to stakeholders, housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri said during the pandemic, 47 command and control centres set up under the Smart Cities mission are serving as crisis management control rooms. In Pune, each Covid case has been mapped using geospatial information systems and the data is being usedto make containment plans. In Bhopal and Ujjain, the centres are being used to provide counselling and telemedicine services to people.
Puri also launched the India Cycles4Change Challenge to support cities to implement cycling-friendly projects in response to the Covid-19. The challenge aims to help experts develop a unified vision and initiatives to promote cycling. In the first phase, 10 cities will be selected. They will get technical support from the Centre and also a reward of Rs 1 crore each.
