Back in 1992, Bollywood film Bekhudi released with a 16-year-old debutante who would go on to become one of the most iconic actors of her time. 19 years and over 30 films later, Kajol remains one of the most-loved stars in the country, and the numerous awards she has earned over the years prove that she has always been in a league of her own. Ever since her breakthrough performances in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in the 90s, Kajol has been a household name in India, but the star leads quite a private life. From her favourite workout routine to her hobbies, here are ten interesting facts about Kajol that are lesser-known.

1. Kajol comes from a family of actors, producers, and filmmakers

Kajol is the great-granddaughter of Rattan Bai, an actor and singer in the ’30s, granddaughter of actor-director-producer Shobhna Samarth, and daughter of director Shomu Mukherjee and veteran actor Tanuja. She is also the cousin of Rani Mukerji and director Ayan Mukherjee.

2. She was the first female actor to win a Filmfare award for a negative role

Kajol's work in Gupt: The Hidden Truth earned the actor a Filmfare award for Best Performance in a Negative Role back in 1998, making her the first female actor to receive the award. The star also holds the record for the highest number of Filmfare Best Actress awards received. She was also the second youngest person in India to receive the Padma Shri award. 

3. Kajol is one of only four Bollywood actors to have a miniature doll in Harrods

In 2006, Kajol joined Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra to become one of the only four Indians to have miniature dolls modelled after her in Harrods, the iconic luxury department store in London. 

4. She was also the first Indian star to ring the opening bell at NASDAQ

Along with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol became the first Indian star that got to ring the opening bell at the American stock exchange, based in New York City. This opportunity came as part of the promotions for the duo's 2010 film, My Name is Khan. 

5. This is the one film that has changed her as an actor

In an interview, Kajol confessed that Udhaar Ki Zindagi changed her as an actor and how she viewed the profession. The 1994 film saw a 19-year-old Kajol play a character with an emotional depth that she struggled to reach. “By the time I did Udhaar Ki Zindagi I had already done three films. But at that point of time I was so exhausted. I think I went through something like an emotional burnout.” The actor even confessed to telling her mother she no longer wanted to make movies, as she didn’t want the responsibility of giving an honest performance. However, she doesn’t have any regrets, since that film eventually led her to meet her husband, Ajay Devgn.

6. She is also a passionate philanthropist

Kajol is an ardent social worker, passionate about children’s education. She is involved with Shiksha, an NGO that works for the same cause, and is also the brand ambassador of Pratham and The Loomba Trust, charity organisations for children. The star has even received the Karamveer Pushkar award—a global civilian honour given by the UN—for her social justice efforts.

7. The multi-hyphenate loves reading novels and writing poetry

Kajol's hobbies include reading science-fiction and horror novels and writing poetry. Her love for literature, however, doesn't extend to her scripts. In an interview with Anupama Chopra, the actor said, “I don't like to read scripts generally, even though I am a big reader. I prefer to hear it narrated to me. That's one of my quirks.”

8. Kajol isn't one for big splurges

"I wouldn't say I'm stingy, but I'm careful about how and where I spend my money," Kajol once said in an interview with Filmfare. She confessed that she scrutinises her children’s spending habits, and asks them for accounts of how much they spent. "Whenever my kids go out, I ask them for a hisaab. They get annoyed but they have to give me an account. It's important for them to understand the value of money."  

9. She loves her daily cup of coffee, and can't get enough of seafood

Kajol often posts pictures of herself on Instagram enjoying her morning dose of caffeine, and is also known for her love for seafood, a trait she shares with her mother-in-law. Reportedly, the star has a soft spot for crab meat in particular. 

10. This is her favourite form of exercise

In an interview with Vogue, Kajol confessed that she loves Pilates and dancing. “I am obsessed with Pilates… but my all-time favourite is western dance for a quick fun workout session.” When asked what was on her workout playlist, the actor confessed, “My playlist has a lot of old and new [songs], but the one staple on all my playlists is ‘Titanium' by Sia. I love strong chick songs.”
